Choosing replacement heat-seal tape starts with the machine specification. PTFE (Teflon) coated glass fabric adhesive tape provides a non-stick release surface for suitable heat-sealing and packaging applications, but width and thickness must be considered alongside the tape grade and adhesive.
Identify the tape you are replacing
Record the existing product code and check the machine manual or approved maintenance specification. “PTFE tape” is a broad description. Confirm that the product is the correct adhesive release tape for your equipment rather than a different type of tape.
Choose the width for the area being covered
Measure the specified tape coverage area in millimetres and follow the machine manufacturer’s fitting instructions. Do not choose width from the package or seal width alone: the tape may need to cover a particular bar, surface or assembly.
If the required width is not listed online, ask MRP about in-house slitting. Provide the grade, required width, roll length and quantity so availability can be confirmed.
Understand backing and total thickness
Backing thickness describes the PTFE (Teflon) coated glass fabric backing. Total thickness includes the adhesive layer as well. These measurements are different and should not be compared as if they were the same.
When reviewing product tables, check the column heading and units. A micron is one thousandth of a millimetre: 100 microns equals 0.100 mm. Compare the same type of measurement across products and use the current data sheet for the selected grade.
Avoid choosing on thickness alone
A thicker tape is not automatically the best replacement. The correct selection also depends on the backing construction, adhesive, operating conditions and machine requirements. Use the specified grade where available, and ask for technical guidance before substituting another product.
Check roll and fitting details
Confirm roll length, release liner and quantity before ordering. Apply the selected tape according to the machine and tape instructions. Do not assume that a higher temperature claim from another grade applies to the product you are buying.
